Macmillan Cancer Support's response to Department of Health's surplus announcement

Friday, 29 August 2008, England

In response to the Department of Health's announcement on Wednesday of an NHS surplus of £1.75 billion, Duleep Allirajah, Policy Manager for Macmillan Cancer Support, said:

'How can the Government continue to say it cannot abolish prescription charges in England when the NHS has a £1.75bn surplus? Maybe now the Government can scrap these unfair charges and stop taking money from the sickest people with confidence that, unlike cancer patients, the NHS can afford it.'
